I edit documents that were not written to be read. Promotional terms are drafted by a legal team to protect an operator, published in the smallest type the layout allows, and accepted by players in the two seconds between a deposit and a spin. My work is to slow that moment down: to say what the clause actually obliges you to do, in euros and in hours, before the accept button is pressed.

Background

I came into this from consumer contracts rather than from gambling. Broadband bundles, gym memberships, insurance add-ons — different industries, identical anatomy. The advertising describes a benefit, the terms describe an obligation, and the gap between them is where money quietly disappears. Bonus rulebooks are the same species, only faster: the reader meets them mid-transaction, with the cashier already open.

The clauses I check first, in order

The wagering base. Bonus only, or bonus plus deposit? The same 30x means two different debts, and the difference is usually one preposition.
The contribution table. Which categories count, at what rate, and which titles are excluded outright. This is where most bonuses are actually lost.
The maximum bet. A single round above the cap voids the lot. It is one line long and easy to breach by accident during an autoplay run.
The clocks. Wagering deadline, free spin expiry and withdrawal cap are three separate mechanisms, not one, and they rarely expire together.
The sticky clause. Whether the bonus amount is deducted at cash-out and whether real balance is consumed before bonus balance.

Evidence discipline

Nothing gets published from memory. Each clause I describe is captured as a dated screenshot, quoted verbatim, and tagged with where it lived — offer page or general rules. When those two sources disagree, the disagreement is the story. I recommend readers keep the same file: a dated capture of the terms, the timestamp of the claim, and the bet history for the wagering period. Without that trio, a dispute becomes one memory against one database, and the database wins.

Four things I will not write

Testimonials that do not exist. No invented player, no invented town, no invented payout time.
Numbers I cannot source. Licence references, tax rates and payout speeds are either evidenced or left out.
Operator voice. This desk does not register anyone, pay anyone or verify anyone. The operator does those things.
Winning systems. The mathematical edge in a game does not negotiate with a staking pattern.

The part readers underestimate

Category contribution. Everyone remembers the multiplier and forgets that the same stake counts fully in one section of the lobby and barely at all in another.
